Selected Social Determinants of Health for Rural North Dakota

Most North Dakotans have some form of health insurance coverage, although 6.6% of its residents lack health insurance (Kaiser, 2022). According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the average per capita income for North Dakotans in 2021 was $64,524, with the rural per capita income at $65,540. The ERS reports, based on 2021 ACS data, that the poverty rate in rural North Dakota is 11.1%, compared with 10.8% in urban areas of the state. 8.2% of the rural population has not completed high school, while 5.2% of the urban population lacks a high school diploma according to 2017-2021 ACS data reported by ERS. The unemployment rate in rural North Dakota is 2.4%, while in urban North Dakota it is 1.9% (USDA-ERS, 2022).
