Purpose

The North Carolina Loan Repayment Program (NC LRP) offers repayment assistance for educational loans in exchange for providing comprehensive primary care services in eligible facilities serving high need patients in rural and underserved communities of North Carolina.

Recipients must agree to a 4 year service commitment.

Program guidelines

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements:

  • Employment start date is within 5 years of submitting the application
  • Have an unrestricted license to practice in North Carolina
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Accept Medicaid and Medicare
  • Not currently under an existing service commitment

Eligible providers include:

  • Primary care physicians (MD and DO)
    • Family medicine
    • General internal medicine
    • General surgery (in Critical Access Hospitals only)
    • Obstetrics/gynecology
    • General Pediatrics
    • Psychiatry
  • Dentists
  • Dental hygienists
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Physician assistants
  • Certified nurse midwives

Amount of funding

Award amounts:

  • Up to $100,000 for physicians and dentists
  • Up to $60,000 for nurse practitioners (including psychiatric), nurse midwives, physician assistants, and dental hygienists
