The Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) Program provides funding to support the training of residents in new or expanded primary care residency training programs in community-based ambulatory patient care centers. The purpose of the THCGME program is to strengthen the primary care workforce by supporting medical and dental training programs in primary care, community-based settings with an emphasis on improving the distribution of this health workforce in rural and underserved communities.

Awards will be made for:

1. An expanded number of resident positions at existing HRSA THCGME Programs
2. New resident positions at new Teaching Health Centers (THCs) that have never received payment under the HRSA THCGME Program for the applicable residency program

Priority will be given to applicants with a principal training site located in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), a medically underserved community (MUC), or a rural community, as defined in section 1886(d)(2)(D) of the Social Security Act.

Eligible applicants are community-based ambulatory patient care centers that sponsor the training of an accredited primary care residency program in the following specialties/disciplines:

• Family Medicine
• Internal Medicine
• Pediatrics
• Internal Medicine-Pediatrics
• Obstetrics and Gynecology
• Psychiatry
• General Dentistry
• Pediatric Dentistry
• Geriatrics

Total funding available: $18,400,000
Number of awards: 28
Project period: 4 years

Award amounts are formula based, calculated from the number of awarded resident full-time equivalents. The FY 2023 interim payment rate will be $160,000 per resident FTE.
